Green Bananas

There is a song about green bananas. A 90 year old man goes to the grocery store and wants to buy some bananas and all they have are green bananas. He asks the clerk if they have bananas that are not green. The clerk says, take the green ones home, in a couple of days, they will be yellow and ready to eat. His response was…”Miss, I am 90 years old, I may not have a couple of days, I would like to eat them today.”

I am going to a funeral today for my brother-in-law. He was 65 years old and lived the last half of his life in a wheel chair. Every time I saw him, he was smiling and was able to kid around and tell jokes. He loved his family and especially his grandchildren. He is an inspiration to me about what life deals you. You have a choice to how you will look at things and how you will live with your choices and events in your life. One regret that I have is that I waited for the bananas to become yellow. I did not know him the best that I could. He had a lot to teach any of us, but other things came first.

My dad passed away over two years ago and there is one thing that I am very happy that I did. The summer before he passed, I made a special trip home and helped him work on the car. During that time, I made it a point to ask him if he was proud of me. The answer was yes. The answer was great to hear, but I think the conversation was the most important. I am very glad that I had that conversation when I did and I did not wait for the green bananas to turn yellow.

Business, family, friends and so much more all is guided by this simple rule. Don’t wait, get it done now, make the phone call to make it happen, learn about people and things today, tell them you love them. Don’t wait for when the bananas might turn yellow. Do it now.
